INTRODUCTORY COURSE IN GYNAECOLOGICAL CYTOLOGY [NHSCSP Diploma] - (Thinprep®)

A full time four week course which is suitable for trainee Cytoscreeners or BMSs with little or no gynaecological cytology experience.Trainees must be employed in a Cytopathology Laboratory and gained some basic microscopy experience as recommended by NHSCSP guidelines. All participants will be invited to attend a one week Follow-Up course one year later at no extra cost.

BMS/CYTOSCREENER ONE-DAY UPDATE (Topics:Glandular Neoplasia & Borderline Changes)

This is a one day update for experienced Biomedical Scientists and Cytoscreeners designed to refresh their knowledge and keep up to date with current trends. PLEASE NOTE: This forms only part of the NHSCSP mandatory triennial requirements.

The respiratory tract two day non-gynae course is designed for qualified BMSs and covers many aspects of the IBMS Advanced Specialist Certificate (General Level) syllabus, including specimen preparation techniques, anatomy, and histology. Normal cellular features, contaminants and artefacts, features of malignancy will be covered both by lectures and practical microscopy sessions.

The serous fluid two day non-gynae course is designed for qualified BMSs and covers many aspects of the IBMS Advanced Specialist Certificate (General Level) syllabus, including specimen preparation techniques, anatomy, and histology. Normal features including cellular composition of effusions, features associated with reactive change and malignancy will be covered by formal lectures and practical microscopy

URINARY TRACT CYTOLOGY COURSE

The urinary tract two day non-gynae course is designed for qualified BMSs and covers many aspects of the IBMS Advanced Specialist Certificate (General Level) syllabus, including specimen preparation techniques, anatomy, and histology. Recognition of normal cellular constituents, inflammation, atypia and malignancy will be covered by practical microscopy sessions and formal lectures.

CYTOPATHOLOGY FOR PATHOLOGISTS COURSE - Non Gynae

This 4 day course for consultants and SPR's which covers ONLY non-gynaecological cytology.

Due to popular demand we have added an optional half day mock exam which will be held on the last day of the course for those waiting to take MRCPath exam.
Please indicate on the application form whether you wish to attend this day or not.

The department is open from 9-5 pm Monday to Fridays

CYTOLOGY MEDICAL LABORATORY ASSISTANTS COURSE

This is a course designed for MLA's as commissioned by our LRCTC User Group. It is a one day introductory course designed to cover topics such as an overview of the NHSCSP, terminology, role of an MLA and audit. The course is structured to make full use of interactive teaching resources.

SAMPLE TAKER INITIAL TRAINING

Formally known as the Foundation Course, the content & structure of this course has been revised in 2020 to meet on-line requirements for re-accreditation status by The Royal College of Nursing.

Applicants are advised to familiarise themselves with the current guidance for sample-taker training updated Feb 2020 https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cervical-screening-cervical-sample-taker-training

This course is designed for qualified and registered nurses, nursing associates, midwifes, physican associates, integrated sexual health care professionals or GMC doctors wishing to undertake cervical samples as part of their work. The course content is in line with National Guidance and  comprises of pre-course distance learning material, on-line course modules, and classroom teaching

This is a modular course held over a 2 week period with continual on-line assessments, discussion forums, and designated classroom sessions all of which are mandatory components. Classroom sessions will be held at the London Regional Cytology Training Centre at Northwick Park Hospital unless otherwise stipulated. Lectures will be given by both experienced practitioners and cytologists.

A period of supervision and mentoring in required following the course in order to reach qualified status. For this it is essential that, on application, that a designated mentor and external assessor have been assigned.

CYTOLOGY FOR COLPOSCOPISTS

This is online Cytology for Colposcopists course has been approved by the BSCCP for Trainee Accreditation.

Developed by the LRCTC the course provides detailed information on

  • Laboratory organisation and sample processing, including HPV testing
  • Cervical cytology screening, reporting and NHS CSP management protocols
  • Cytology and microscopy of normal and abnoraml cell componnets of the cervical sample
  • MDT protocols and cerivcial cancer audit

The course is designed to meet the requirements of the trainees pathology experience in their understanding of practical laboratory processes and the viewing of cytology slides. The course structure is underpinned by case presentations, Q&A sessions, and an interactive quiz

The course is delivered via MS Teams and is of 5 hours duracton (excluding breaks). Completion of the course has been recognised by the BSCCP as equivalent ot face-to-face laboratory training for both registered nurses and doctors training in Colposcopy
